2015 HonoreeCOLLEEN SLASON
Colleen Slason has been selected as the 2015 recipient of the annual Harwinton Outstanding Citizen Award, which will be presented for the 41st time at a banquet in her honor on Friday, April 24, at Fairview Farm Golf Course. Formerly from Naugatuck, she and her husband, Eugene, have been Harwinton residents since 2007, and are raising their family here. Mrs. Slason attended Quinnipiac College and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a double major in Biology and English. Prior to moving to Harwinton, she was an editor and production manager at Shoe String Press in North Haven. She is currently Harwinton’s Assistant Town Clerk and is working toward becoming certified for that position.
Mrs. Slason’s contributions to Harwinton began almost immediately upon moving to town when she joined and became an enthusiastic member of the (GFWC) Harwinton Woman’s Club becoming its vice president in 2009 and serving as its president from 2010 through 2012. During that time, she also became a board member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Connecticut and had served in the position of Time Keeper for a two-year term. She became Banquet Manager of that organization in 2012 and was responsible for booking and organizing its state board meetings, conferences, and conventions.
Mrs. Slason has been a very active member of the Bronc Callahan Community Fund for several years and serves on its Board of Directors and has been its treasurer since 2009. She has been in charge of gate receipts and organizing volunteers for the gate area at that organization’s biggest annual fundraiser on Father’s Day, the Volkswagen “Bug-In.”
Mrs. Slason served on Harwinton’s 275th Anniversary Committee in 2012, acting as its secretary, where she assisted in organizing the town’s celebration events. She has recently initiated the organization of a “Knit and Stitch” that meets at the Harwinton Library one Wednesday night and one Saturday morning each month.
When asked about being chosen as this year’s honoree, Mrs. Slason commented, “The genuine and very friendly nature of Harwinton's residents was readily apparent when we moved here, making us realize that our choice to live in Harwinton was the perfect one for our family. It's simply a great place to live and raise a family! To be chosen as Harwinton's Outstanding Citizen for 2015 is truly an honor. When I look at the list of previous recipients of this award, I am greatly humbled to be included amongst such notable individuals in our community. ”
